Was talking to Jeff Walsh, a cool mate who is in charge of Oasis, the gay youth-oriented magazine online that I used to read years ago when I lived in London. We haven’t spoken for a long time as we are busy blah blah - I was pleased to hear that he have written a new novel called Haterobics - should buy it when it comes out

:-)

I decided to have a quick look at Oasis as I havent read it for a good while so I saw an entry that interested me - something about a comic book written by a gay Korean-American -cum- Black-American (does they really exist!!!) - it is something that I will buy - after many years of reading Wonder Woman, X-Men, Lucifer etc - i ll go and buy this somehow…seeing that its a indie comic - not easy to get hold of if you live in Belfast. I don’t even know if they do sell it in Amsterdam either - wait and see.

more details about this comic this comic here.

My Uncle the Monkey…, originally uploaded by BelfastShane.

Years ago I visited my mate Nick Hill who was relocated to Gib for work - it was my first time visiting there and it was a beautiful place but fairly dull once you get to explore almost everywhere.

The highlight was when Nick took me up the Rock in his Volvo (it was so steep its a miracle we didn’t fall off the Rock but what with Nick being from the Welsh valleys, he’s used to steep hills I suppose) - to meet the gorgeous monkeys that everyone always talk about (well, at least outside Gibraltar!)

I would love to go back there one day - just to see the monkeys! :-)

in a few days time, there will be the Dail elections down South. It will be interesting to see how people will vote for people - will Fianna Fail the governing party stay in power? Will they go into the opposition? Will Sinn Fein gain significant gain? Will anything interesting ever happen?

Sometimes elections can be predicting to an extent it can be terribly boring. No wonder I can’t wait to move to Amsterdam with Shiku to explore new cultures and the different political system there - and of course, new languages to learn!

Politics…that reminds me of the time when I stood as a Green Party candidate for Belfast City Council a few years back. It was a very difficult time being part of a very small political party (without any seats in Northern Ireland) and there was a nagging question over whether we are a ‘all-of-us’ party or a party that brings together all the Traditions i.e. Republicans, Nationalists, Unionists and Loyalists in one group to agree on a common ground - sometimes I felt as if I was made ashamed of being what I am.

However I am very glad to see Brian Wilson being elected as the first Green member of the Northern Ireland Assembly but one thing that saddened me: he was a member of the Alliance Party up to the end and he left the Alliance just because he decided not to stand again at the elections so the Alliance have chosen someone else and then he changed his mind saying that he wants to stand after all.

Thats why I would support people like Peter Doran or Ciaran Mussen in the Greens - they haven’t left other parties to join the Greens - I know I was like that, having left several parties in the past!!!

Yay!

A few days ago I have purchased a return flight to Nairobi from London Heathrow - with Virgin Atlantic - they have started a new route there - Kenya must get quite popular for some reasons…its usually that you ll get cheap charters to Mombasa but this time they are offering a ‘new route’ offer of £352!

Why not? ;-)

Am pretty excited about seeing my mates again, my wee lady Shiku and others - I will get to spend a week at Kerugoya School for the Deaf which I have spent almost a month volunteering way back in 2000. The plan is to discuss me future with Shiku and whether she would move with me to Belfast & Amsterdam or not etc. Also we will focus on researching Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) etc - at Kerugoya School for the Deaf and hopefully Rev. Muhuro’s Secondary School in Nyeri District.

Shiku’s mammy was saying that she ll go and cook the best Kikuyu food in Kikuyuland for me! :-) I guess the one thing we Irish and ‘em Kikuyu have in common is that we cook too much in order to kill our guests!

i was supposed to be in Durham this weekend for my Interpreting course but my tinnitus/vertigo made it so difficult for me (yes, I am very annoyed by this as I am way way behind with everything!)

Having intense tinnitus and vertigo is something new to me - I have emailed my deaf mate in Belfast to see if we can meet up to discuss this as he started to get them a few years ago and he said he had to re-learn how to balance as he was crawling all over the place like a baby.

Nasty, indeed.

The photo was taken at Easter when I stayed a week at Hatfield College, one of Durham University’s many colleges. I loved the place as it is beautiful. My mate Michael Osborne was saying that the Quad is something - he was at Collingwood College when he studied Law at Durham years ago.

I have finished reading the book last night as I had trouble sleeping due to me dizzy spells.

It was well writen and I have recalled many incidents there as it was reported in the newspapers when I was younger - I was impressed by Di’s belief in that kids should be showered with a lot of love and all that. That is something I hope we can do for our kids in the future - we dont know where we will be - but I know that our kids will never be starved for love.

Worth buying if you do like Diana, Princess of Wales - she was a popular figure in the Deaf community as it was she who made BSL a big part of popular culture - a deaf mate from Belfast was saying that his mother decided to learn BSL when she saw Lady Di signing on TV :-)

Years ago in 2000, Monica and I were on our way to the Outspan Hotel near Nyeri for a shower (a long story - for another time).

Shiku’s family are from the village called Giathenge which is near Othaya Town (where Kenya’s present President was born) - all of that is in Nyeri District.

At first I thought she was from Nyeri Town - but no, she’s from Nyeri District - a bit like us Irish with our parish mentality and county - for instance, i’m from Co. Down, my Nana was from Co. Antrim etc.

Either way, Nyeri is a very beautiful area - I would love to hire a jeep one day and go exploring the District and even the Rift Valley itself.

The Aberdares, the mountain range there, always reminds me of the special guy I once dated many years ago :-)

This is Erik Witteborg, a HMFD yank studying Mandarin and Chinese Sign Language (ZGS) right now in Shanghai - now and then I go and view his excellent vlog on youtube in good ASL with his gorgeous facial expressions :-)

you can view the very cool vlog in ASL here and see why he is worth a mention on my blog - not that I would be egotastic - ha ha ha!

Let me know what you think of this…

Beside, its one of me dreams to go over and study in Shanghai for a short period of time say a month or a year! Oh my mate Jun Lu is studying there so it would be great for me to see him there.

What will you say, Shiku? ;-)

was checking out Amsterdam Charles’ flickr as hes very good with taking photos, especially of lovely men looking natural and all that.

That photo have amused me as it reminds me of the old hearing aids adverts, now long gone, thank goodness, however the quality of the photo is quite good.

I must go back to my essays!

Two weeks ago I have sent off the transcript for the first year I did at Durham University. It was a real hassle and I only found out two months ago that even that I may have done well in my resits, my marks would be capped at 50% due to the University regulations which is unfair.

However I have applied for a MA in General Linguistics at UvA which I am excited AND anxious at the same time - I fear that I might not get in seeing that I don’t have a conventional degree - only a postgraduate diploma (if I ever pass this year).

Let’s keep our fingers crossed something good will come out of this.

And YES, I haven’t been to Greece, believe it or not…I think the idea of drinking ouze there in Greece do scare us Gilchrists away!

Antrim Road - the 173 Trust, originally uploaded by BelfastShane.

Earlier today I was going through the Flickr collection of Turkey and I saw a few people eating kebab. I was like ‘Aye, that will solve my dilemma of deciding what to eat today’ as I wasn’t in the mood for cooking but I didn’t want to order a pizza, a Chinese or my usual Taco Chips.

Off I went down Antrim Road, one of Belfast’s oldest roads, full of history, to Mersin Kebab which is owned by the Turks - as my mates knows, I am very fond of the Turks and their unique ways. Once I got there, I asked for kebabs and chips in Turkish, greeting them by saying “Selam, naber?”

Naturally they were delighted :-)

It turned out that the owner is from Mersin and the assistant is from Ankara - they are quite cool!

The kebab was okay - but it wasn’t as good as the ones we ate in Nijmegen!

Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s book, originally uploaded by BelfastShane.

finished reading the book last night at 4am - i will go and email her saying she ll be held responsible for keeping me up that late as the part about her entry into the Netherlands, how she have entered the politics and all that was really fascinating - a bit similar to my entry into the Green Party of Northern Ireland - I may have been born in the North but sometimes I feel like a stranger among my own people - the people of the North because of language differences i.e. I can’t get to speak Belfastese (the Belfast dialect of English) and the small things associated with it.

Ayaan is a fascinating figure - she fought for womens rights etc and men in the Islamic world were not very tolerant of that saying that it is against the teaching of the Koran - in some ways, it is identical to me trying to deal with my Catholic faith which led me to leave the Church itself.

When I was at Thierry’s place in Ans (Liege), I came across that really cool dictionary of SVK (Finnish Sign Language) and I wanted to take it home!!!

Thierry said that he got it from Finnish Deaf Association so I went and fired off an email to them asking how much it is and how I can get it etc. They got back to me the next day - and then they sent it to me straight away which is VERY effective.

I got it a few weeks ago and I am soooo happy with it.

Apparently the 2006 Dictionary of Ugandan Sign Language is very similar to this book but Lars Wallin led the Ugandan Sign Language Research Project in Kampala and he is from Sweden so maybe it is the template he have used for Ugandan Sign Language Dictionary - or did Finland use the same model from the Swedish one?

I dunno!

Nickson my Kenyan mate is now in the US visiting his wee daughter. He took his laptop with him there so he managed to send me the photos which he took of me during our visit to the West of Kenya way back in November. I was very glad to see some of them as you may know, I am Deaf and visual aids are very important to us - to help us recall stuff etc.

It took me back, the warm humdity of Kisumu, the sweaty atmosphere of Rongo and the greasy chips by a lit lantern in a half-wrecked shopping arcade in Kisii Town, a school that made me their Patron just like Lady Di! Kenya is one of my many homes - a place to call home - it is where Shiku my Wonder Woman is from

Kuja Secondary School is one of the few secondary schools for the Deaf in Kenya. We have eight boys there who were educated at Kerugoya School for the Deaf who is supported by my old school and Kenya Deaf Children Trust.

The boys are quite smart, witty, clever and all that. I am very proud and honoured having known them and that I do hope I will get to meet them again in the future to see what they will make out of their lives. Yare, one of the boys, a Somali himself, is a real inspiration to me - he wants to move to Wajir where he will work with Deaf Somalis etc, encouraging them to develop their Nation that is now in a big war in Somalia.

God “knocked for six” by Vatican decision to shut limbo - Heaven braces itself for huge soul influx

God is said to have been completely “bowled over” by the Vatican’s announcement yesterday that it is to shut down Limbo. Sources close to the supreme being say that he had no foreknowledge of the decision which is believed to have sent shockwaves through the Heavens.

The Vatican has not offered any explanation as to why it has decided to close Limbo after 700 years. Opened in the early 1300s as an eternal holding place for unbaptised babies, it is thought to currently hold more than 1300 trillion gazillion willion souls and the Vatican has offered no clues as to where it plans to relocate them.

Rumours have circulated in recent year about Heaven becoming increasingly cramped, although these have been hard to substantiate due to the notorious difficulties involved in obtaining unbiased reports from the heavenly realms - the only people considered to be capable of achieving reports of a non-partisan nature, so-called “media”, are not deemed to be creditable news sources.

If the rumours are indeed true, the fate of the Limbo souls would appear to hang in the balance. Asking to remain anonymous, an angel told us, “we really don’t know where they’re going to go. Clearly they can’t be placed in temporary accommodation outside the ‘gates’ because then they might as well just stay where they are. But Heaven already has an influx of hundreds of thousands of souls every day and we really don’t know how we can just suddenly take in such a large number of souls.”

There has been speculation that the Vatican’s latest announcements on homosexuality are part of a concerted effort to reduce the numbers of souls entering Heaven. With so called LGBTs having to endure less oppression and rejection in many of today’s modern societies, the number of homosexual souls entering Heaven in the last 20 or so years has shot up. Previously, such people, tormented by guilt and self-loathing, tended not to lead productive or happy lives and so ended up burning in Hell.

With the change in attitude towards them that has swept through much of western society, homosexuals have begun to live increasingly happy and fulfilling lives and so, on dying, they have been entering into Heaven in increasingly large numbers. Being a homosexual is not apparently a bar from entering Heaven or joining the US military, although the Vatican has just announced that gays will not be allowed to enter Catholic seminaries. It is not known if there is any relation between the dwindling number of catholic seminarians and the increasingly large number of visible, happy and well-adjusted gays in secular life. There have been rumours of a gay “sub-culture” in Catholic seminaries but there could be no listing found for such in the popular gay venue guide Spartacus, usually a reliable source on such things. God is not believed to be worried about a gay subculture in Heaven.

It is thought the Vatican hopes that by discriminating against and oppressing homosexuals
more actively, it will cause them to return to their formerly unhappy ways of life and thus disbar themselves from entry into Heaven.

Outrage has been expressed at the Vatican’s alleged plans to examine the Limbo souls for pre-natal homosexual tendencies. It is thought that any souls identified with such inclinations will be sent to burn in Hell in order to reduce the final number of souls that will be relocated to the next life and thus ease the strain at the “pearly gates”. Arguments that such pre-natal tendencies, or post- for that matter, could only be considered to have been fleeting, given the short earthly life of the souls in question, appear not to have been taken into account by the Vatican council dealing with the issue. Their cyclical on homosexuality, however, does draw a distinction between “fleeting” inclinations and what it calls “deep-seated” ones.

Another outcome of the Vatican decision thought to be exercising God’s mind is the question of what to do with the thousands of angels who have been staffing Limbo since it opened over seven centuries ago. One such angel reacted less than serenely to the news, saying: “It’s alright for them. They’re not in the least affected by the decisions they make but what the f#*! am I gonna do now? It’s been hundreds of years since I was up there. It’s gonna take me ages to readjust!”

There is little hope that the Vatican will backtrack on its decision, such a move normally taking centuries and usually being preceded by a long drawn out process in which the decision eventually becomes dogma and a tenet of the Catholic faith before it can be summarily discarded by a sitting pope.

God is not thought to be considering sending a representative to earth to negotiate with the Vatican. The Lord is known only to have once sent a representative to earth, his white son, Jesus, just over 2 millennia ago. That visit ironically resulted in the founding of the Roman Catholic church and the Vatican. It is thought that God now believes that he was rash in sending his son and didn’t think through the consequences of his action enough.

With these latest events, God has opened himself up to the charge of “taking his eye off the ball”. There has been some criticism of him for spending too much time talking on the phone to US president George W. Bush. The 43rd president of the United States is on record as saying that God calls him for personal chats.
